Actually, I wanted to take the time this summer to cycle to Istanbul. After Trier-Rome-Athens-Jerusalem 2013 and Danube/Balkans 2018 it was time again. I already had a scenic route. But when I had the opportunity to accompany the NGO LUkraine LUkraine asbl on a convoy from Luxembourg to Ukraine last December, a thought process started in me. When I stood on a vantage point in Kyiv shortly after Christmas and looked down on the Dnieper, it became clear to me, despite the air alert: you have to return here in the summer of 2023. And so I took some time off and will start a charity bike tour from Luxembourg to Kyiv on July 1. It’s a sign of solidarity with a wonderful country in need.
Власне, цього літа я хотів знайти час для велоподорожі до Стамбула. Після Трір-Рим-Афіни-Єрусалим у 2013 році та Дунай/Балкани у 2018 році, настав час знову. У мене вже був мальовничий маршрут. Але коли в грудні минулого року мені випала нагода супроводжувати громадську організацію LUkraine LUkraine asbl в автоколоні з Люксембургу в Україну, в мені почався процес мислення. Коли я стояв на оглядовому майданчику в Києві незабаром після Різдва і дивився вниз на Дніпро, мені стало зрозуміло, незважаючи на повітряну тривогу: сюди треба повернутися влітку 2023 року. Тому я взяв відпустку і 1 липня вирушаю у благодійний велотур з Люксембургу до Києва. Це знак солідарності з прекрасною країною, яка потребує допомоги.
What it’s all about
As a sign of solidarity with the Ukrainians the bicycle traveller and journalist Michael Merten will go on a charity bicycle tour. In July and August 2023, he will cycle straight from Luxembourg to Kyiv in order to collect donations for the country under attack and to report on his encounters with the people there.
На знак солідарності з українцями веломандрівник і журналіст Міхаель Мертен вирушить у благодійний велотур. У липні та серпні 2023 року він проїде на велосипеді з Люксембургу до Києва, щоб зібрати пожертви для країни, яка зазнала нападу, та розповісти про свої зустрічі з людьми, які там живуть.

Rehabilitation for children and food packages
It is specifically about two aid projects in Ukraine. The Charity Foundation of the Ukrainian Chamber of Commerce and Industry supports rehabilitation centres in the Ukrainian Carpathians. Far away from the war zones, children and young people are supported with numerous offers to come to terms with their traumatic experiences. More information at charity.ucci.org.ua.
The Luxembourg aid organisation LUkraine asbl and the Ukrainian aid organisation Haustov are putting together food packages for the Kharkiv region, which has been severely affected by the war. There, the delivery of food and essential goods is difficult, especially to small villages near the front line. More information at ukrainians.lu.

Мова йде про два проекти допомоги в Україні. Благодійний фонд Торгово-промислової палати України підтримує реабілітаційні центри в українських Карпатах. Люксембурзька благодійна організація LUkraine asbl та українська благодійна організація „Хаустов“ збирають продуктові набори для Харківської області, яка сильно постраждала від війни. The initiator
Journalist Michael Merten comes from Trier and has done several major tours as a passionate bicycle traveller. Originally, he wanted to cycle to Istanbul this year. But then he got to know the work of the aid organisation LUkraine and accompanied an aid convoy from Luxembourg to Kyiv in December 2022. There he decided to change his route and travel to the country under attack.
